Lanzhou Lubricant R&D Center Successfully Develops a Four-Stroke Motorcycle Oil Additive Package

In recent years, China's motorcycle industry has developed rapidly and China has become the world's largest motorcycle producer. In order to build the Kunlun brand image and improve the market competitiveness of Kunlun products, the Lanzhou Lubricant Research and Development Center of PetroChina Lubricant Company decided, after in-depth investigation of motorcycle oil market demand, to optimize the formulation of its SJ four-stroke motorcycle oil product so as to lower the cost of the additive package used in the oil. From the initial selection and compounding of single additives to the final determination of the product formulation, the work took nearly two years of painstaking effort. In September 2010, the R&D center finally succeeded in developing a four-stroke motorcycle oil additive package using a salicylate detergent as the main detergent system at a treat rate of 6.5 percent, and in November the package passed all of the Program IIIE, VE, VIII and BRT tests and the four-stroke motorcycle oil bench tests. The oil formulated with this additive package meets the requirements of the Q/SY RH2022 four-stroke motorcycle oil specification and the JASO T903 specification, and offers excellent oxidation resistance, anti-wear performance, high-temperature detergency, low-temperature sludge dispersancy and shear stability. At the same time, it delivers extremely high cost performance.

At present, oil formulated with this additive package is undergoing a 10,000 km circuit driving test with four motorcycles at the Internal Combustion Engine Oil Testing and Evaluation Center of the Tianjin Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute of the machinery industry, together with the measurement of emission values under the operating-mode method and the measurement of the vehicles' maximum (wide-open throttle) power performance, in order to examine the effects of SJ 10W-30 four-stroke motorcycle oil on the detergency, wear resistance and emissions of China III motorcycles.
