On December 8, the competition will fire its final shot in the ice and snow of Yakeshi; facing the snowy grassland, everything is ready and the entrants are fully prepared — an “ice and snow contest” full of speed and passion is about to begin!
Minus 30 degrees becomes “the norm”: the Kunlun King will face an extreme-cold challenge
With biting wind and snow filling the sky, Yakeshi, where the temperature stays at around minus 35 degrees Celsius year round, has a world-class professional ice-and-snow testing ground that comprehensively tests the “cold resistance” performance of all competing vehicles. Ice tracks, snow-covered curves and scenic venues offer a different kind of event experience; the ice-and-snow track, surrounded by a sea of forest and snow and by thick artificial snow walls, sparkles like crystal in the sunshine, and drivers cruising along it feel as if they are in a fairyland.
According to on-site staff, the technical characteristics of the ice-and-snow surface at Yakeshi are very unique: drivers taking corners at high speed can use the soft snow walls to push the car back onto the track, but if the temperature is too high the snow walls may become too soft, or if a driver’s control of speed and angle is poor the car may sink into the snow wall — this places very high demands on the drivers’ skill and judgment.
In this regard, a relevant person from the organizing committee once pointed out that the ice-and-snow track is a touchstone; competing in an environment like Yakeshi is both a test for self-owned brands and an opportunity to show their own strength. With the sharp rise in sales of self-owned automobiles, Chinese cars have won increasing recognition from consumers. Only self-owned cars that can withstand the test of harsh environments are the products that make consumers feel most reassured.
Decisive battle at the summit: Group K drivers are full of confidence
Snow and ice surfaces are not unfamiliar to the drivers, but Yakeshi is a brand new stage, so all 15 drivers taking part in the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge have arrived at the Yakeshi circuit early to carry out intensive cold-weather training. Through a series of on-site reconnaissance runs, the entrants have recorded the conditions of every part of the stage one by one; engines roar and snow flies at the test ground.
Facing the coming new challenge, the 15 drivers are high-spirited: “A new track brings a different feeling — first, the scenery of the venue is magnificent, all dressed in silver, and after a test drive in advance it feels quite thrilling. For example, on the multi-corner track of the individual time trial there are many interesting S-curves on the ice and snow, which greatly increase the difficulty of the race; sometimes if you don’t take the first corner well, the next one may go wrong as well.” In addition, Wang Yanlong, who won the King of Racing crown at Karamay, and Zhou Nan, who took the King of Racing honor at Dafeng, both hope to continue the strong form of their earlier round victories and charge toward a new round’s championship title.
Wang Yanlong said: “This is my first time coming to Yakeshi for a competition on ice and snow. The ice and snow scenery here is so beautiful. After surveying the venue, what impressed me most was the ‘snow slalom’; although this event existed in the previous two rounds as well, on an ice-and-snow surface it is extremely difficult to control the car and keep it as stable as on asphalt, which places very high demands on the driver’s skill. I hope to perform at my best in this event.”
Zhou Nan also said: “Today’s reconnaissance activity, first, let us get familiar with the track before the competition starts and feel confident; second, on this snowy day it lets us release some pressure — everyone seems to be having a lot of fun, without that tense feeling before a race.” He also pointed out that, because of the special nature of the ice-and-snow venue, every time a car passes a corner it throws up a large spray of ice chips and snowflakes: “Although the bigger the snow spray the better the visual effect, the scattered ice chips and snowflakes covering the ice surface greatly reduce tire grip, so drivers running too close to the car in front or behind need to pay extra attention.”
In addition, to ease the tension of the event and improve its appeal, PetroChina Lubricant Company carefully created several mysterious snow sculpture models on site. From the on-site spy photos released by the organizer, a large snow sculpture nearly two people tall has taken preliminary shape at the entrance of the Yakeshi circuit, and other ice sculptures are also being made around the clock.
