Recently, the 'Research on Long-Life Anti-Wear Turbine Oil for Naval Vessels', in which the Dalian R&D Center took part, won first prize for scientific and technological progress from the General Logistics Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. This is the company's second project to win first prize for scientific and technological progress from the PLA General Logistics Department after general-purpose marine diesel engine oil, and it has not only made another major contribution to naval oil support but also generated profit for the company.
Turbine oil is currently the second most used lubricant in China's navy. The naval anti-rust turbine oil now in use by the navy is a product of the early 1990s with a short service life and no anti-wear requirement, and it has problems in use such as heavy oil mist and poor environmental performance. As the equipment of the armed forces has developed and been upgraded, the naval anti-rust turbine oil currently used can no longer meet the requirements of new high-power steam turbines. The Quartermaster Materials and Fuels Department of the General Logistics Department therefore assigned the Naval Logistics Technology and Equipment Research Institute the task of 'research on long-life anti-wear turbine oil for naval vessels' in 2009, to develop a high-performance naval turbine oil meeting the oil requirements of the new equipment. The Naval Logistics Technology and Equipment Research Institute carried out research on this oil in cooperation with the company.
By selecting and balancing base oils and additives, the Dalian R&D Center, which undertook the task, successfully developed a long-life anti-wear turbine oil for naval vessels that meets the required specifications. The oil shows significant improvements in oxidation resistance, extreme pressure performance, high-temperature water-washing rust resistance, air release and water separation, and its overall performance reaches the international advanced level. In 2010-2011 the developed oil passed the single-unit performance bench test of a localized prototype power station turbine, the 500-hour full-size (actual machine) reliability bench test and the reliability bench test of the main propulsion turbine unit; during the tests the oil's performance remained stable and it was well matched to the units. In 2013-2014 the developed oil underwent a one-year service test on the Liaoning aircraft carrier, in which its performance was good and met the military's requirements, and it is still in use today. In 2015 the developed oil was successfully put into industrial production at the East China Lubricant Plant and the Dalian Lubricant Plant and passed military certification.
Long-life anti-wear turbine oil for naval vessels can be used for the lubrication and protection of high-power, high-load, high-ratio marine steam turbines and power transmission devices that require anti-wear properties. It can replace the naval anti-rust turbine oil formerly used by the navy and be promoted for use in all other steam turbine power plants of the navy, and it is of great significance for simplifying product grades and guaranteeing the oil supply for the navy's new equipment.
