In early December, the “Kunlun Lubricant Cup · 2017 China Car Performance Competition” (CCPC) will sound the assembly call for its final battle in Yakeshi City, Hulunbuir. As the highlight of the 2017 CCPC, the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge has been hugely popular throughout; after the hot and humid Karamay and the complex road surfaces of Dafeng, the 15 “grassroots kings of racing” will continue their contest and make a final charge for the championship title of “Ice and Snow King.” At that time, nine-ball queen Pan Xiaoting will also appear at the finals to wave the flag for the drivers, making the event even more eye-catching.
Blood-pumping: the “Kunlun Kings” head for the hometown of ice and snow
This Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge is a newly added “Group K” event of the 2017 CCPC, an athletic activity created especially for the general public. As early as July this year, the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge held offline qualifying rounds. After successive rounds of selection, only 15 drivers stood out from more than 100 entrants with outstanding technical performance, launching a bid for supremacy as the “Kunlun King of Racing.”
In the previous two rounds, there were instances of drivers grazing and colliding in the narrow corner timing events, but there were also moments when drivers overtook opponents in the corners, drawing exclamations from the crowd. From scorching heat to bitter cold, tempered by the first two events, the competition has grown ever tenser. As grassroots masters selected level by level, the 15 drivers will face an unprecedented extreme-cold challenge at Yakeshi; increasingly guarded opponents and ultra-difficult snow tracks will make breaking through exceptionally hard.
Landing in Yakeshi this time, the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge combines the free and expressive off-road culture of snow racing with rugged mountain terrain, using the artificial track on Shangfeng Lake at the CATARC proving ground to offer a feast of ice and snow for drivers who love snow power sports. While highlighting a comprehensive test of vehicles in extreme cold weather, it also serves as another review and boost of Chinese production car performance.
According to the event requirements, the Yakeshi round divides Group K into individual time trial and team duel. The individual time trial is further divided into an all-round competition and a lap time trial, both using a format of five drivers per group with multiple cars starting together; drivers drive through multiple corners and a circular track to the finish, with total lengths of 1,000 meters and 600 meters respectively on artificially prepared snow-compacted surfaces and an ice-and-snow loop with linked hairpin curves. This comprehensively tests the power and handling of the competing vehicles as well as the drivers’ handling of the car and precision in steering direction, bringing a brand new challenge to the 15 finalists.
The start of the team duel will be even more “blood-pumping.” The top five grassroots drivers selected in the individual competition will face off against five experience drivers in the ultimate duel, racing two laps on a high-speed multi-corner track only 6 meters wide and 1,000 meters long; the results of the five drivers in each group for the second lap are then totaled to determine champion and runner-up. It is worth noting that the event coincides with Yakeshi’s coldest period of the year, when the local average temperature may drop to around minus 35 degrees Celsius; competing in such extreme cold makes one worry for the 15 drivers.

She says the “speed and passion” brought by motorsport serves as a way to relieve her own pressure: “Billiards itself is very stressful, and as an athlete there aren’t many ways to relieve it, so I fell in love with the more thrilling sport of racing.” As the spokesperson of the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge, Pan Xiaoting will be on site to cheer on the 15 “candidate kings,” wave the flag to start Group K, and, with her healthy image and sportsmanship of daring to take on challenges, add more positive freshness to the 2017 Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge.
