Challenging -30 Degrees Celsius: Kunlun Tianrun Put to the Test at the CCPC Yakeshi Event

Challenging -30 Degrees Celsius: Kunlun Tianrun Put to the Test at the CCPC Yakeshi Event

After the successful conclusion of the Yakeshi final round of the Kunlun Lubricant Cup - 2018 China Car Performance Competition, a series of lubricant oil tests conducted in a severe cold climate got under way in an orderly manner.
On December 9 and 10, 2018, the CCPC project team technical team of the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (hereafter CATARC), together with lubricant technical experts from the PetroChina Lanzhou Lubricant Research and Development Centre, a media filming team and relevant personnel from Tuhu Car Care, carried out related winter tests of automotive engine lubricant performance in Yakeshi.

Yakeshi is located in the central part of Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia, and for nearly half of every year it is "winter". In the winter of 2017 alone there were more than fifty days of extreme cold of -50 degrees Celsius. Yakeshi is also home to China's largest winter vehicle testing bases - the Hulunbuir winter vehicle test site of CATARC and the Bosch winter vehicle testing centre. The oil testing at the Yakeshi leg of the Kunlun Lubricant Cup - 2018 China Car Performance Competition was carried out at these two test bases.

To ensure the rigour and objectivity of the oil test results, the testing process adopted and referred to international, national and industry standards for the lubricant industry. Representative 2018 CCPC competition vehicle models that had not yet passed their running-in period were selected. They included: GAC Trumpchi GS4 1.5T automatic, SAIC-GM Chevrolet Equinox 2.0T automatic, Beijing Hyundai Mistra 1.6T, SAIC Volkswagen Lamando 1.4T, Changan Automobile CS35 1.6L and Dongfeng Honda CR-V 1.5T. For oil testing, Kunlun Tianrun series products (KR9-T 0W-20 C5, KR9-T 0W-20 SN PLUS, 0W-40 SN and KR9 5W-30 SN PLUS, etc.) were compared with factory-fill oils of equivalent quality grade and viscosity in on-vehicle measurements including low-temperature fluidity tests, low-temperature cold-start tests, idle noise tests and 0-60 km/h standing-start acceleration.

As the only designated oil of the CCPC, Kunlun Tianrun, under Kunlun Lubricant, became the star of this test. According to the on-site test personnel, Kunlun Tianrun not only has good low-temperature fluidity, quickly reaching every corner inside the engine to provide lubrication protection and keeping the engine in an effective lubrication state, but also has anti-wear performance 70% higher than the standard limit, effectively preventing low-temperature mechanical wear and allowing vehicles to deliver their ultimate performance even in extremely cold environments. At the same time, the core TGDI protection technology featured in the newly upgraded Kunlun Tianrun series enables the lubricant, when in contact with the engine's moving parts, to form a lubrication protection layer only 2 micrometres thick yet highly effective, isolating deposits such as sludge that cause performance loss, preventing low-speed pre-ignition and protecting turbocharged direct-injection engines, for greater peace of mind and safety.

To comprehensively test lubricant performance and help produce an authoritative lubricant report, the testing mainly adopted physical and chemical tests, simulation tests and on-vehicle tests. Of these, the actual performance tests were carried out in Songming, Kunming (0-100 km/h standing-start acceleration and long-distance fuel consumption under combined operating conditions) and here in Yakeshi. The on-vehicle performance testing part examined vehicle performance at high altitude and in extremely cold weather, which is of very important reference value for examining lubricants in terms of engine energy saving, cleaning protection, friction and wear.
It is reported that the detailed test data and results will form the "2018 CCPC Lubricant Test White Paper", which will be released by the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre at the 2018 Kunlun Lubricant Cup - China Annual Performance Vehicle Awards Ceremony (for the specific date, please keep following the "Kunlun Tianrun" WeChat account).
It is believed that with the joint efforts of all parties, this lubricant oil testing under severe cold conditions will further promote and enhance Chinese consumers' professional understanding of lubricants, advance the application of advanced lubricant technology and the growth of the industry, and guide the healthy development of the lubricant industry.
