Olio per moto On October 30, 2017, the national key R&D program PetroChina project launch meeting and implementation plan consultation and review meeting was grandly held at the Changping Petroleum Science and Technology Exchange Center in Beijing. Leaders and experts from the participating units and several media outlets attended the meeting.
PetroChina's project "Tackling Key Technologies for High-Performance Lubricant Production and Their Application" was successfully declared a national key R&D project, becoming the R&D project in the lubricant field to receive state support during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. This project will aim at upgrading the quality of the lubricant industry, focusing on research into the structure-activity relationship of base oils, molecular structure design and performance control, and the selective conversion mechanisms of hydroisomerization and olefin oligomerization. It strives to achieve breakthroughs in key technical fields such as hydroisomerization of multiple feedstocks, ethylene oligomerization, development of high-grade internal combustion engine oil products and independent evaluation methods, to overcome the world-class difficulty of deep isomerization dewaxing of high-wax feedstocks, and to reach advanced international levels in overall technology.
Organized in a unified manner by the Science and Technology Management Department of the group company and led by the Petrochemical Research Institute, and after preliminary declaration, formal declaration, defense review, task statement review and budget assessment, the project was officially approved and established by the Ministry of Science and Technology after nine months. The project is jointly undertaken by nine units: PetroChina Company Limited, the Petrochemical Research Institute, the lubricant company, East China University of Science and Technology, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Tianjin University of Science and Technology and Northeast Petroleum University. In accordance with the requirements of the "Notice of the High Technology Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology on Organizing the Preparation of Implementation Plans for Key Special Projects", the company organized the project launch meeting and implementation plan review meeting in Beijing on October 30, 2017, established a project leading group and engaged project advisory experts to review the implementation plan.
China is the world's second-largest base oil producer and the largest lubricant consumer. The lack of advanced high-quality base oil production technology has led to an imbalance in China's base oil structure, with 75% of high-quality Group III/IV base oils dependent on imports. In addition, China's lubricant product standards and evaluation methods have long followed foreign practice, and the development of products based on independent technology has lagged seriously. The American gasoline engine oil quality standard has developed to SN/GF-5 and work is under way on the GF-6 standard; for diesel engine oils, the CK-4 and FA-4 product specifications were promulgated in 2017, whereas China's current national standard for gasoline engine oils is at most SL/GF-3 and for diesel engine oils at most CI-4, lagging 2-3 quality grades behind foreign standards. This leaves China's lubricant industry at a very disadvantageous position in competition with foreign products, especially in high-end internal combustion engine oil products. The China Engine Lubricant Standard Development Innovation Alliance has already launched the development of the Chinese heavy-duty diesel engine oil standard D1-2019, formulating engine lubricant standards suited to China's actual conditions and developing high-grade internal combustion engine oil products.
PetroChina's lubricant company is a specialized lubricant company directly under PetroChina, integrating production, R&D, sales and service. Kunlun Lubricants currently has more than 700 grades of lubricant (grease and additive) products across 17 major categories, widely used in many industries including automobiles, aviation, steel, chemicals, railways and machinery and equipment manufacturing. PetroChina's lubricant company has two R&D centers in Lanzhou and Dalian; it is the specialized company that began lubricant research and development earliest in China, has the most advanced equipment and the strongest independent R&D capability. It has established several joint laboratories in lubricant-related fields with FAW, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Wanliyang Company and the General Armaments Department of the PLA, and has built good cooperative relationships with the Southwest Research Institute of the United States, ISP, ABB, Siemens and the CIGRE association. For many years PetroChina's lubricant company has persisted in original research and development of its own formulation additive packages and lubricant products. Independent R&D not only reduces the company's production costs and delivers good economic benefits, but also breaks the monopoly of foreign brands' high-grade additive packages in the domestic market, driving the development of the domestic additives industry and generating enormous social and indirect economic benefits. Since the lubricant company was founded in December 2000, it has been granted 143 patents and has been responsible for or participated in drafting 112 industry and national standards related to lubricants, and has successively won three National Technology Invention Awards and National Science and Technology Progress Awards in fields including gear oils and internal combustion engine oils, filling a gap for the Chinese lubricant sector in national awards.
This project will tackle key production technologies for high-quality base oils, develop SN/GF-5, CI-4 and CJ-4 products (also aligned with the D1 specification), and carry out research and development of the next-generation API GF-6 gasoline engine oil specification product in step with international practice, thereby reversing the long-standing situation in which China's top internal combustion engine oil products lag 2-3 generations behind foreign product development. Together with domestic automotive OEMs it will develop simulation and bench evaluation methods for evaluating internal combustion engine oil performance, break the technical barrier created by international standards organizations' monopoly on developing and setting evaluation methods, comprehensively raise the level of lubricant production technology, change the passive, lagging and dependent situation and achieve a leap in lubricant production technology from mainly following to running abreast and then leading.
PetroChina Kunlun Lubricants and its R&D team, in accordance with the new blueprint drawn up at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, will gather Chinese wisdom, put forward Chinese solutions, make Chinese contributions and shoulder historical responsibility. Building on this national project, we will also strive to carry out standard innovation in areas such as passenger car gasoline engine lubrication, serving customers and serving great projects.
