Breaking Foreign Brands' Monopoly in Nuclear Power: Daya Bay Nuclear Unit Runs on Kunlun Lubricant

On July 1, Unit 3 of the Lingao Nuclear Power Station in Daya Bay, Shenzhen, entered power generation status more than 100 hours after a successful turbine roll-off. This unit is served by Kunlun Lubricant, marking a breakthrough by a domestically produced lubricant against the monopoly of foreign brands and its successful application in the nuclear power sector.
On June 25, Unit 3, using Kunlun KTL-46 long-life turbine oil, achieved a successful roll-off on the first attempt, after which the lubrication system was shown to be operating well.
The Daya Bay Lingao Nuclear Power Station has China's largest-capacity million-kilowatt-class nuclear power turbine unit, representing the pinnacle of technology and manufacturing in the turbine industry.
"There is no precedent for domestically produced turbine oil being installed in a million-kilowatt unit, so we did not consider domestic oil." If the customer doused the project team of PetroChina Lubricant Company with cold water four years ago, then four years later the lubricant company has rewritten that history through strong technology and unremitting effort.
The KTL-46 Kunlun long-life turbine oil successfully applied at the Daya Bay Lingao Nuclear Power Station holds certification from turbine manufacturer Alstom and offers high quality, oxidation resistance, rust removal and long service life. It is especially suited to turbine units above the 600,000 kW class and can be used normally for 20 years without an oil change.
This successful application of Kunlun Lubricant sounded the clarion call for PetroChina's entry into the nuclear power sector, broke the monopoly of international lubricant brands in this high-end market, and will help accelerate the localization of China's nuclear power industry. At present, three batches totaling 260,000 liters of Kunlun KTL-46 long-life turbine oil have been delivered to the Daya Bay Lingao Nuclear Power Station. The nuclear units involved are Units 3 and 4 of Phase II of the Lingao Nuclear Power Station. Pre-operation flushing of Unit 4 is under way, and it is expected to be connected to the grid for power generation in 2011.
