Kunlun Lubricant Supports China's Most Distant UHV Project as Power Transmission Tops 300 Billion kWh

On January 12, China Media Group's Xinwen Lianbo reported that the Zhundong-Wannan plus/minus 1,100 kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project has delivered more than 300 billion kWh of electricity in cumulative terms, enough to meet the annual household electricity demand of 133 million families, equivalent to saving 90 million tonnes of standard coal for East China and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by more than 255 million tonnes.
Technology Breakthrough:
The Key Role of Kunlun Lubricant Transformer Oil
As a strategic project of the Xinjiang Power Transmission to Other Regions programme, the Zhundong-Wannan project starts in Changji, Xinjiang, and ends in Xuancheng, Anhui. Independently developed, designed and built by China, it embodies the highest level of technical sophistication and is currently the UHVDC transmission project in the world with the highest voltage level, the largest transmission capacity and the longest transmission distance.
In this project, transformer oil serves as the core medium responsible for insulation and heat dissipation and for monitoring the transformer's operating status, so as to ensure stable power transmission. Since the project was put into operation in 2018, Kunlun Lubricant transformer oil has empowered grid construction through technological innovation, never absent from any important moment of China's power industry, and has helped equipment run safely and steadily.

Overcoming Difficulties: Solving Heat Dissipation and Safety Challenges
In line with the operating conditions of China's UHV systems, Kunlun Lubricant invented a series of performance evaluation methods for DC transformer oil, took the lead in establishing a DC transformer oil-paper composite insulation evaluation system and, by adopting a unique production process and additive formulation, resolved the conflicting challenge of balancing heat dissipation performance with safety performance. The KI50X DC converter transformer oil it developed combines excellent oxidation resistance, gas evolution characteristics, sludge dissolution performance and insulating properties, and has been fully applied in the world's highest-voltage, largest-capacity and longest-distance plus/minus 1,000 kV Changji-Guquan UHVDC transmission project, as well as the world's first plus/minus 500 kV Zhangbei flexible DC demonstration project and a cumulative total of 20 UHVDC transmission projects.
