On September 29, 2014, the Lejia circuit in Huairou, Beijing hosted the annual real-vehicle testing for the Kunlun Lubricants Cup “China Heart” 2014 Top Ten Engines selection. The candidate engines that had stood out in the experts' preliminary review once again faced the strict test of the expert review committee, undergoing stricter, more professional on-site evaluation in the specific models they were matched to, with greater emphasis on actual driving feel.

Eleven judges from the expert review committee took part in this testing process. Through 8 major categories and 12 specific test items, the judges scored each test engine on “on-site evaluation items” according to a professional engine evaluation system. Afterwards, the expert review committee held a review meeting and, based on a calculation system of 5 major evaluation indicators, gave each engine its final total score. This year's “China Heart” event attracted the attention of many media outlets, and major media such as Tencent and Sohu provided full follow-up coverage and interviews. The person in charge of the selection explained that the “China Heart” Annual Top Ten Engines selection is now in its ninth edition. As one of the world's three major engine awards and the most authoritative automotive engine selection in China, it has drawn great attention from automakers and the industry since its first edition. This year the selection rules allow imported engines (in domestically produced vehicles) to participate in “China Heart,” opening a bigger platform and giving more independent-brand automakers a chance to pit their engines against the world's advanced engines on the same field. A total of 46 engines from 28 manufacturers registered for the 2014 selection. After two rounds of strict review, 15 models advanced to the final test session to compete for the 2014 Top Ten Engines award. These included the Audi 2.0T engine and the Citroën 1.6THP engine, which have both won “World's Top Ten Engines” honors, as well as new engines developed by independent-brand automakers such as Geely's 1.3T, BYD's hybrid system and JAC's 2.0T.

The “China Heart” Annual Top Ten Engines selection has formed a relatively complete scoring system based on the experience of previous editions, judges' opinions and current conditions and resources. In terms of specific evaluation, participating engines are scored mainly on five aspects: power indicators, technological advancement, market performance, energy saving and emissions reduction, and on-site evaluation. In addition, at the test track the judges comprehensively assessed the participating engines of these models in terms of static observation, electronic control calibration, NVH performance, starting performance, launch performance, hard-acceleration performance, engine braking and acceleration response time, finally giving a “on-site evaluation indicators” score. These evaluation systems give ordinary consumers convenient access to a deeper understanding of engine technology and also provide corresponding guidance for consumers when purchasing a car.

At the preparatory meeting held earlier, with the approval of all the expert judges, Yang Junjie, chief engineer of PetroChina Lubricant Company, was elected a member of the expert review committee for this year's “China Heart” Annual Top Ten Engines. During the event he said: the constant renewal of engines places different demands on lubricants, and the new Kunlun Tianrun products timely meet the requirements of the advanced engine models on the market, which this real-vehicle testing activity has further proved.
