Kunlun marine medium-speed engine oil has received Caterpillar certification.

On November 10, 2022, Kunlun marine medium-speed engine oil, independently developed by China National Petroleum Lubricant Company, obtained certification from Caterpillar Inc. This certification fills the gap in Kunlun Lubricants’ international OEM certification for low-alkalinity medium-speed engine oil and provides strong technical support for further expansion in the marine oil market.
Caterpillar is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction machinery and mining equipment, gas engines, and industrial gas turbines, as well as one of the well-known manufacturers in the marine medium-speed engine market. Its products are widely used in ocean shipping, inland waterway transport, offshore drilling platforms, dredging, and other fields. In recent years, as the International Maritime Organization's emissions regulations have been upgraded, requirements have been introduced to reduce the sulfur content in fuel, and marine medium-speed engine oil products have also faced the need to switch between high and low base numbers. Shipowners have reported that old-formula low-base-number medium-speed engine oil products cannot meet the performance requirements after the switch, and low-base-number medium-speed engine oil products do not have certifications from internationally recognized OEMs.
In response to the above market feedback, the Dalian R&D Center of PetroChina Lubricant Company immediately began upgrading its low-base-number medium-speed engine oil products, focusing on resolving the insufficient oil dispersancy issue raised by customers. After the upgrade, the products completed marine oil simulation tests and bench tests, with results showing performance comparable to that of overseas competing products. After completing the laboratory work, a sea trial was required in accordance with OEM requirements. With the strong support and assistance of the company’s Special Oil Department and the sales staff in the Central and Southern China marine oil regions, permission for the sea trial was obtained through multiple proactive communications with the shipowner, and the certification work progressed smoothly. The sea trial lasted 8,000 hours, and cylinder inspection results confirmed the excellent oil performance, meeting the OEM’s stringent product admission standards and ultimately obtaining the certification.
