Beijing Municipality
1. Yu Zhiquan: male, Han ethnic group, born 1961, probationary member of the Communist Party of China, driver with Beijing Jinjian Taxi Co., Ltd.
On the evening of August 13, 2008, Yu Zhiquan took an American tourist suffering from an acute illness to hospital. After accompanying the patient through the entire consultation, he drove the guest back to the hotel and presented a Chinese knot as a gift. The American passenger gave him in return an American national flag autographed by the US swimming star Michael Phelps, on which was written: "Love Phelps, and love China too." On the evening of the Dragon Boat Festival in 2008, Yu Zhiquan single-handedly subdued two men who were committing an assault and handed them over to the police; in June 2008 he fought with criminals and preserved a large sum of money for a female driver who had been robbed, suffering permanent injury to his lower back.
Tianjin Municipality
2. Li Hongjun: male, Han ethnic group, born 1978, CPC member, driver with Tianjin Yinjian Taxi Co., Ltd.
At 1 a.m. on March 8, 2009, two criminals robbed a foreigner near Hubei Road in Tianjin and fled toward the Municipal Government Garden. Li Hongjun rushed to the scene on hearing of the incident, and it happened that the criminals got into his taxi; he therefore spoke to them warily, and mid-journey the criminals hurriedly jumped out and darted into the Municipal Government Garden. As Li Hongjun was cleverly scanning the direction in which the criminals had fled, they, with no way out, dashed out of the garden and got into his taxi a second time. Li Hongjun drove to the front of the municipal government building and, disregarding the risk of damaging his car, wedged the right-hand door against the wall and captured the criminals.
3. Yang Zhihui: male, Han ethnic group, born 1970, driver with Tianjin Hengda Sunshine Passenger Transport Co., Ltd.
At 3 a.m. on September 16, 2008, Yang Zhihui spotted criminals fleeing in panic on bicycles after a robbery near Jianshan Road in Hexi District, Tianjin. He immediately drove after them for more than 1,000 meters, knocked the criminal suspect down beneath the overpass on Jiefang South Road on the Middle Ring Road, and quickly jumped out of the taxi and lunged at him. With the assistance of two other citizens, the suspect was successfully captured and taken to the police station. Yang Zhihui has acted courageously on many occasions and in 2008 captured three criminals in two separate acts of bravery.
Hebei Province
4. Song Guoyi: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, fleet driver at the Zhongjie Industrial Park, Cangzhou Bohai New Area.
At 1 p.m. on May 29, 2009, a gang of criminals fled by car after committing a robbery. Song Guoyi immediately drove in pursuit while keeping in contact with the police. At this point the criminals, sensing trouble, kept throwing sticks, bottles and other objects from the car, and even fired a crossbow, all of which Song Guoyi avoided with his skilled driving. The panicked criminals then drove their car into a roadside ditch, and the three criminals on board fled in different directions, two of whom were captured by Song Guoyi and police officers who arrived afterwards.
Shanxi Province
5. Wen Jinsheng: male, Han ethnic group, born 1965, self-employed taxi driver in Jiexiu City.
At 6 p.m. on June 12, 2009, a criminal took Wen Jinsheng's taxi to Hongshan Village, then entered two courtyards in succession to steal and assault, after which he got into Wen Jinsheng's taxi again. Noticing that he had blood on his hands and a knife in his grip, Wen Jinsheng floored the accelerator and then slammed on the brakes, throwing the man off balance inside the car, and got out himself to telephone the police for help. With the help of family members who came to assist, Wen Jinsheng devised a way to trap the man inside the vehicle, and the police soon arrived and arrested him.
Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
6. Zhang Xiaodong: male, Han ethnic group, born 1984, driver at the Hohhot office of Shaanxi Power Transmission and Transformation.
At 8 p.m. on October 25, 2008, while refueling at a gas station, Zhang Xiaodong saw a man quarreling with a female attendant. Enraged, the man took out a shiny cleaver more than a foot long and raised it to strike at the head of the attendant, who was bending over writing a receipt and completely unaware. Without a moment's thought Zhang Xiaodong raised his left arm to block the blow, protecting the unguarded attendant, while his own hand was severely cut. The attacker, also feeling remorse, helped Zhang Xiaodong into his car and rushed him to the Inner Mongolia Armed Police Hospital.
7. Tian Xiaoguang: male, Han ethnic group, born 1968, passenger transport driver with Tongliao Transport Co., Ltd.
At 6 a.m. on January 5, 2009, as Tian Xiaoguang drove a fully loaded King Long coach near Sandaoban, a criminal on board suddenly stabbed at him with scissors. Tian Xiaoguang fought the criminal with one hand while his other hand kept a firm grip on the steering wheel, doing his utmost to slow down and cut the engine. After he fought to wrest the weapon from the criminal, the man jumped off the coach and fled; Tian Xiaoguang, though injured, chased and subdued him together with the passengers, and then fell unconscious from excessive blood loss and was rushed to hospital.
Liaoning Province
8. Han Yongjun: male, Han ethnic group, born 1964, driver with Dalian Dajunda Taxi Company.
At 1 a.m. on August 20, 2008, as Han Yongjun walked home from the night shift and reached the Western Corridor, he was robbed by three motorcycle-borne thieves. Han Yongjun fought back and was stabbed in the abdomen and hip by the criminals. Han Yongjun shouted loudly, and the criminals got on their motorcycle and fled toward Hongling Road. Han Yongjun hailed a taxi and gave chase, reporting the criminals' movements to the police; after a pursuit of more than 10 kilometers, the criminals abandoned the motorcycle and fled. Han Yongjun also got out to chase them but collapsed to the ground from excessive blood loss, and was out of danger only after emergency treatment.
9. Zhang Haijuan: female, Han ethnic group, born 1976, chairwoman of the labor union of the No. 2 Operation Company, Gaosheng Engineering Technology Division, PetroChina Liaohe Oilfield Company.
On July 22, 2008, on her way home from work by car through Hujia, Zhang Haijuan encountered an ammonia leak at an ammonia plant; a vast expanse of ammonia shrouded the road surface and trapped her within it. Just as Zhang Haijuan was about to accelerate through the cloud of ammonia, she noticed a family of three at the roadside having difficulty moving. Disregarding her own safety, she stopped the car and let the three get in, and persisted in driving them to a safe area. The mother and young daughter of that family of three were already unconscious; without Zhang Haijuan's rescue they would probably not have escaped disaster.
Jilin Province
10. Chen Liwen: male, Han ethnic group, born 1974, driver with the narcotics squad of the Songyuan Municipal Public Security Bureau.
On July 16, 2008, driving home, Chen Liwen came across a drug trafficker escaping from pursuit by car. Chen Liwen pulled his car across in front of the trafficker's vehicle and, after being pushed back five or six meters, jumped out and lunged at the trafficker's car, capturing the still-dazed trafficker. At noon on October 4 of the same year, while having a meal, Chen Liwen noticed police officers preparing to arrest four drug traffickers, so he charged into the private room where the traffickers were together with the officers, bravely wresting the sharp knife from the traffickers' hands, assisting the officers in capturing all four and seizing more than 40 grams of drugs on the spot.
11. Wang Jianjun: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, driver with Jilin Kangfu Degao Taxi Company.
At 11 p.m. on November 11, 2008, after hearing information about a criminal suspect broadcast on the radio, Wang Jianjun gave up his fares and went to search for him, spotting a suspicious man near the city cement plant. Wang Jianjun went straight at the man, brought him down and captured him before handing him over to police officers. At 10 p.m. on March 1 of the same year, Wang Jianjun learned of a robbery near Longtan Mountain, immediately rushed to the scene and, at the park gate, together with another driver, blocked the criminal. Facing the criminal's sharp knife, Wang Jianjun cleverly distracted him and then lunged forward, subduing him.
Heilongjiang Province
12. Liu Yunlong: male, Han ethnic group, born 1978, taxi driver with the Mudanjiang Logistics Association.
At 7 p.m. on April 1, 2009, while operating his taxi, Liu Yunlong saw two motorcycle-borne thieves committing a robbery; he took the victim into his car and drove in pursuit. The criminals took an S-shaped escape route to evade the chase. To avoid injuring pedestrians, Liu Yunlong twice cut in and struck the motorcycle, overturning it, then went up and fought the criminals, at last capturing one of them. During the chase and struggle, Liu Yunlong injured his arm and shoulder, and his taxi was damaged in the collision with the motorcycle.
Shanghai Municipality
13. Li Chenggang: male, Han ethnic group, born 1971, driver with Shanghai Dazhong Transport Long-Distance Passenger Transport Company.
At 10 a.m. on April 21, 2009, a car was involved in an accident on Beiyan Highway in Chongming County and overturned into a river, leaving the five people inside in critical danger. Li Chenggang, passing by, picked up a brick, jumped into the river, smashed the car window and pulled the drowning people out through the window, then immediately carried out first aid measures including chest compressions and artificial respiration, finally bringing the drowning victims out of danger. Li Chenggang's arms and feet were cut in many places by glass and metal, and his blood stained the river surface red.
14. Xue Guoxin: male, Han ethnic group, born 1961, driver with Shenqiang Taxi Company of Shanghai Johnson Group.
At about 4 a.m. on November 25, 2008, as Xue Guoxin was looking for passengers on the road, he came upon a knife-wielding criminal robbing a taxi driver. He immediately drove up to block the criminal's way and engaged him in a desperate struggle. Dexterously dodging two attacks, Xue Guoxin suddenly threw the criminal to the ground and pinned him down firmly. At this point two other taxi drivers arrived on hearing the news, and the three together took the criminal to the public security authorities.
Jiangsu Province
15. Yang Xuetao: male, Han ethnic group, born 1979, driver with Nanjing Dafang Jinshenghong Taxi Company.
On the evening of July 9, 2008, through meticulous observation, Yang Xuetao discovered three fugitives and, after cleverly reporting to the police, assisted the police in capturing them. At 5 p.m. on May 24, 2009, Yang Xuetao encouraged two young girls who had been forced into prostitution to report the case and assisted the police in capturing more than 30 members of the prostitution ring. At about 8 a.m. on June 13 of the same year, two thieves smashed a roadside vehicle, stole property and fled. Yang Xuetao quickly called the police and gave chase; one thief drew a knife to threaten him and was seized by Yang Xuetao.
Zhejiang Province
16. Ma Guoliang: male, Han ethnic group, born 1967, driver with the Metering Center of the Shaoxing Electric Power Bureau.
At about 10:30 p.m. on August 12, 2008, Ms. Xu, who lives in the southern part of the Shaoxing urban area, was robbed inside her residential compound. Ma Guoliang, who lives in the same compound, heard cries for help coming from downstairs and, in his alarm, ran barefoot down the stairs. At the stairway he saw a man run past him in a fluster; Ma Guoliang chased the bag-snatching thief and, just as he caught him, was stabbed in the abdomen by the criminal's knife. Blood gushed out at once, and he was out of danger only after emergency treatment.
17. Wu Rigen: male, Han ethnic group, born 1957, farm vehicle driver in Xiaoshun Town, Jindong District, Jinhua City;
18. Kong Lingwen: male, Han ethnic group, born 1962, farm vehicle driver in Xiaoshun Town, Jindong District, Jinhua City;
19. Wang Sicheng: male, Han ethnic group, born 1964, farm vehicle driver in Xiaoshun Town, Jindong District, Jinhua City.
On the afternoon of January 11, 2009, a collapse occurred at a quarry in Renzhaiqian Village, Lipu Town, Jindong District, trapping two workers under huge rocks. Wu Rigen, Kong Lingwen and Wang Sicheng — drivers of farm tractors hauling stone — risked their lives to rescue one man from the pile of rocks; when they tried to save the other, a second collapse occurred at the quarry and sliding rocks struck all three in an instant. The three men and two quarry workers were all sent to hospital for emergency treatment. Wu Rigen died on February 13 despite medical treatment; Kong Lingwen suffered severe brain injuries and remains hospitalized after cranial surgery; Wang Sicheng suffered 15 fractures across his body and was assessed as having a grade-eight disability.
Anhui Province
20. Pan Yuehua: male, Han ethnic group, born 1963, self-employed taxi driver in Chuzhou City.
At about 1 a.m. on March 6, 2009, two criminals robbed a taxi driver within the territory of Shuikou Town, Lai'an, Chuzhou. On learning of this, Pan Yuehua rode in a car with the victim's friend to National Highway 104, caught one of the criminals off guard and pressed him to the ground, and immediately called the police. The police captured the other criminal and freed the victim driver, who had been tied up on the back seat of the taxi. Pan Yuehua had also captured a murderer bare-handed back in 1992.
21. Wu Zhangtao: male, Han ethnic group, born 1977, member of the Communist Youth League, self-employed taxi driver in Meishan Town, Jinzhai County.
At 10 a.m. on October 16, 2008, a primary school pupil accidentally fell into a river on the way home from school. At that time the Meishan Reservoir was releasing water for power generation, and the situation was extremely critical. Seeing this, Wu Zhangtao threw himself into the water without regard for his own safety. Because the current was swift and the waterweed dense, the rescue was made considerably more difficult, and the two gradually ran out of strength. Other people who arrived on hearing the alarm jumped into the river one after another and successfully rescued the pupil, but Wu Zhangtao finally, having exhausted his strength, was swallowed by the merciless river and died a heroic death.
Jiangxi Province
22. Wu Youcai: male, Han ethnic group, born 1971, driver with Yingtan Changtong Taxi Company.
At 11 a.m. on June 21, 2009, a man was discovered by Wu Youcai while stealing an electric bicycle and fled in a fluster; Wu Youcai gave chase relentlessly. Seeing that Wu Youcai was pursuing alone, the criminal threatened him as he ran, viciously brandishing the screwdriver in his hand. Wu Youcai paid no attention, rushed up and grabbed the criminal's jacket. The criminal stabbed wildly at Wu Youcai's arm and shoulder. Stabbed in five places, Wu Youcai still fought the criminal with all his might despite the danger, finally pinning him firmly to the ground and subduing the thief with the help of members of the public who arrived on hearing the news.
Fujian Province
23. Chen Yongsheng: male, Han ethnic group, born 1978, self-employed driver in Zhenghe County.
On July 2, 2008, Chen Yongsheng noticed several suspicious outsiders driving a car toward the bus station, so he quietly followed them and called the police. When police officers stopped them for questioning, two abandoned the car and fled, and Chen Yongsheng assisted the officers in catching the two. Not long afterwards, Chen Yongsheng discovered another suspect and, with the help of a friend, captured him. Investigation showed that all three arrested were fraudsters. On June 25 of the same year, Chen Yongsheng spotted two wanted criminals at the entrance of a hotel; he quickly called the police and assisted the officers in capturing them.
Shandong Province
24. Li Lei: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, CPC member, driver with the No. 8 Automobile Transport Company of Heze Transport Group.
On the morning of June 3, 2009, while operating his vehicle, Li Lei saw three men and one woman get on board and casually rummage through passengers' luggage and belongings. Li Lei shouted sternly for them to stop, and the four took out daggers, preparing to rob. Li Lei immediately pulled the vehicle over in the emergency stopping lane and called the police; in the struggle with the criminals his right cheek was cut and his left eye injured. Seeing that the situation was unfavorable, the three men got into a getaway car and fled. The remaining woman, after running about 3 kilometers, was captured by Li Lei and the passengers.
25. Wang Xiujuan: female, Han ethnic group, born 1962, driver of Route 19 bus with Jinan Public Transport Trolley Company.
At 9 p.m. on March 25, 2009, as Wang Xiujuan drove past Quancheng Square, a thief who had stolen a mobile phone was discovered and fled. Wang Xiujuan chased after him and, with the help of passers-by, grabbed the thief's arm and pressed him to the ground. The thief slashed Wang Xiujuan's hand with a blade and broke free and ran; enduring the pain, Wang Xiujuan chased after him, and when she was about one meter from the thief she sprang forward and tripped him with both hands and feet, subduing the man with the help of the crowd and handing him over to the police officers who arrived soon afterwards.
Henan Province
26. Tang Honggang: male, Han ethnic group, born 1976, CPC member, truck driver with Pingdingshan Yuda Power Transmission and Transformation Co., Ltd.
At about 12 noon on March 4, 2009, as Tang Honggang passed the intersection of Kuanggong Road and Tiyu Road, he saw a criminal committing a robbery. He immediately got out of his vehicle and confronted the criminal bare-handed. The criminal fled in panic at the sight. Tang Honggang chased close behind and in the end brought him down and subdued him. Because he used excessive force in capturing the criminal, Tang Honggang injured his left arm and was found on examination to have a fracture of the left forearm. On July 6, 2008, Tang Honggang had assisted police officers in capturing a knife-wielding murderer.
27. Song Peiyuan: male, Han ethnic group, born 1971, CPC member, cadre of the Organization Department of the Xinxiang County Party Committee.
At 8 p.m. on July 21, 2008, driving near the Zhongjie Pharmaceutical Factory, Song Peiyuan saw a tall man surnamed Li chasing a young girl. Song Peiyuan immediately turned his car around and gave chase. By this time Li had caught up with the girl and was dragging her toward the river ditch at the roadside, intending to rape her. Song Peiyuan leapt out of his car, shouted "Stop!" and charged at the criminal, fighting him desperately and finally subduing him.
Hubei Province
28. Chen Jingshang: male, Han ethnic group, born 1963, driver with the First Branch of Wuhan Tomorrow City Express Company.
At 11 p.m. on April 26, 2009, Chen Jingshang saw two criminal suspects snatch the shoulder bags of two women at the Sanyang intersection of Zhongshan Avenue in Jiang'an District. He followed the two criminals by car and promptly dialed 110 to report, indicating the "target's" position, and when the 110 police car arrived Chen Jingshang joined in blocking them. Sensing trouble, the two criminals jumped out of the car and fled separately. One criminal climbed over the railing and crossed the road; Chen Jingshang drove at him and knocked him to the ground, and the public security officers immediately pounced and subdued him.
29. Zhang Hengyi: male, Han ethnic group, born 1971, manager of Yichang Changfa Imported Automobile Repair Center.
At 4 p.m. on February 26, 2009, a minibus crashed through a guardrail in an accident and fell into the Yangtze River, leaving more than ten people on board in critical danger. Zhang Hengyi, on hearing the news, quickly drove to the scene and, together with police officers, jumped onto the minibus involved, tied a thick rope to its chassis and directed the crowd on the bank to haul on it to prevent it sinking further. Zhang Hengyi bent down, opened the door and pulled passengers out of the vehicle one after another, working with the rescue officers to get all the passengers ashore, and then quietly left the scene.
Hunan Province
30. Liu Xueqing: male, Han ethnic group, born 1963, villager of Wulipai Village, Futang Township, Dao County.
In the early hours of June 28, 2009, Liu Xueqing discovered two people stealing a car. He immediately woke his son and neighbors, drove after the criminals and called the police. The group forced the criminals' car onto a lawn and closed in on them. The criminals stabbed fiercely at the group with knives, and Liu Xueqing was stabbed in the right chest and waist, but he bore the severe pain and held tightly on to the criminal, finally subduing him. Liu Xueqing lost consciousness from excessive blood loss and was out of danger only after 24 hours of all-out emergency treatment.
31. He Kuangbing: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, driver with Changsha Carnival Bus Co., Ltd.
At 2 p.m. on September 24, 2008, a criminal snatched a woman's backpack and was fleeing. He Kuangbing drove in pursuit, caught up with the criminal on the south side of the Yinpenling toll station and jumped out to chase him on foot. Facing the criminal's threats and resistance, He Kuangbing was unafraid and, after a fierce struggle, finally subdued him. On the 26th of the same month, He Kuangbing discovered three pickpockets on the vehicle and used the stop announcement system to remind passengers on board, preventing the would-be thieves from succeeding.
Guangdong Province
32. Qiu Peng: male, Han ethnic group, born 1969, driver with Dongguan Public Bus Co., Ltd.
On the afternoon of January 10, 2009, four thieves were stealing on Qiu Peng's vehicle, and one of them, after succeeding, was exposed and took out a dagger, shouting and blustering. Another rushed to the driver's position and tried to press the door-opening button; at this point Qiu Peng, while ordering the thieves to "get away," slowed down and pulled over to the side. Facing the criminal's long knife, Qiu Peng was not in the least afraid, seized an iron bar used for vehicle repairs and fought him, and with the help of passengers finally captured two thieves.
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
33. Ding Zulan: female, Han ethnic group, born 1976, family planning cadre in Yudong Village, Dashatian, Nanning.
At noon on January 22, 2009, two motorcycle-borne criminals stole another person's briefcase and were about to flee; Ding Zulan ran over at full speed and pulled the man, who had already got onto the motorcycle, straight down. In the scuffle the criminals stabbed wildly at Ding Zulan with a weapon and then seized the chance to flee; Ding Zulan picked up the briefcase, returned it to the client and immediately called the police. She was diagnosed with one knife wound to the right jaw and two to the back that injured a lung and caused pneumothorax.
Hainan Province
34. Zhou Yaping: male, Han ethnic group, born 1969, taxi driver with Sanya Tongbao Industrial Development Co., Ltd.
At about 4 p.m. on February 11, 2009, while driving on a road in the urban area of Sanya, Zhou Yaping saw a Russian named Basha and his friend chasing a man who had snatched a bag. Zhou Yaping floored the accelerator in pursuit, picked up Basha and continued the chase. When they reached the vicinity of the Jinjiling railway, the criminal threw the bag on the ground and fled down a small path. Basha and his friend recovered the backpack they had lost and, while thanking him, took out money to give Zhou Yaping as a reward, which he politely declined.
Chongqing Municipality
35. Liu Zutao: male, Han ethnic group, born 1970, taxi driver with Qijiang Tongli Company.
At about 6 a.m. on April 29, 2009, a young man held the female taxi driver Ma Xiaoli hostage at knifepoint; Liu Zutao happened to be driving toward them, and Ma Xiaoli cried loudly for help. Hearing the cries, Liu Zutao disregarded his own safety and fought the criminal with valor, finally subduing the criminal suspect and handing him over to police officers on the spot, ensuring Ma Xiaoli's personal safety and property security.
Sichuan Province
36. Zeng Jianhua: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, driver with Sichuan Changjiang Taxi Co., Ltd.
At 8 a.m. on June 5, 2009, while operating his vehicle and reaching the overpass of the Third Ring Road on the Sichuan-Shaanxi Road, Zeng Jianhua saw that the Chengdu "June 5" bus fire had occurred, with the lives of passengers on board in critical danger. Zeng Jianhua immediately stopped, seized the small fire extinguisher on his vehicle and rushed at the burning bus, using the extinguisher to smash the glass of the front door and rescue two women. He then ran to the front of the bus and smashed the windshield, creating conditions for many people to escape, and afterwards took five injured people to No. 416 Hospital for treatment.
37. Cao Xuewen: male, Han ethnic group, born 1960, CPC member, driver with Yuechi County Xinyuan Taxi Company.
At 7 p.m. on November 29, 2008, a woman whose bag had been snatched by a criminal cried loudly for help. Hearing the cries and seeing the criminal fleeing in a fluster toward a residential compound, Cao Xuewen immediately chased and caught him. Suddenly another criminal darted out from the side, and, holding a sharp knife, stabbed Cao Xuewen twice in the back. He held on to the criminal with all his strength, and the brutal criminal stabbed him again in the left arm; Cao Xuewen finally collapsed to the ground from excessive blood loss. After the incident, the three criminal suspects were quickly captured by the public security authorities.
Yunnan Province
38. Liu Tao: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, driver with Fleet 28 of the No. 6 Company, Kunming Public Transport Group.
At about 11 a.m. on September 20, 2008, as Liu Tao drove past the entrance of the People's Cinema on Zhengyi Road, a middle-aged man in the carriage rushed at the driving Liu Tao with a knife, intending to hijack the bus. After meeting resistance, the criminal viciously stabbed Liu Tao four times, slashing his abdomen. Liu Tao quickly drove the vehicle to the roadside and stopped, opened the doors and won precious time for the passengers on board to get out of danger safely. In the end the criminal was subdued by police.
39. Xiao Chaolin: male, Han ethnic group, born 1964, driver with the Tengchong Passenger Station of Yunnan Baoshan Transportation Group Co., Ltd.
At 12:40 a.m. on December 3, 2008, Xiao Chaolin and Li Zhengrong were driving a coach and reached the vicinity of the Dali toll station, where three men, after stealing property, were preparing to get off and flee; the three men took out daggers and forced Xiao Chaolin to stop the vehicle, and Xiao Chaolin held the door switch down and would not let go, fighting the thieves. At 11 p.m. on August 6, 2008, Zhang Donghui was robbed at knifepoint by two criminals. Taking advantage of the moment when one criminal got out of the car, Zhang Donghui suddenly floored the accelerator and turned sharply, throwing him out of the door, then picked up an iron rod and fought the two criminals. With the help of taxi driver Ding Gang, who was passing by, one criminal was captured and taken to the police station. After obtaining a lead on the other criminal suspect, Zhang Donghui assisted the police station in capturing a perpetrator of "two robberies and one theft."
41. Zheng Hong: male, Han ethnic group, born 1969, driver with Guiyang Public Transport Taxi Company.
In the early hours of April 17, 2009, driving along Qingyun Road, Zheng Hong saw a police officer fighting a knife-wielding criminal. He jumped out of his car and assisted the officer in capturing the criminal. During the struggle the man stabbed at the officer's back with the dagger in his hand; Zheng Hong immediately gripped the blade that was stabbing at the officer tightly with his left hand and fought the criminal, finally subduing him together with the officer. The tendon of Zheng Hong's left index finger was severed and only healed a month later.
Tibet Autonomous Region
42. Ciren: male, Tibetan ethnic group, born 1969, driver with the Logistics Service Center of Kangmar County, Tibet.
On September 28, 2008 and May 26, 2009, Kangmar County was hit by heavy snowstorms, with snow accumulating to a depth of 80 centimeters, seriously threatening the safety of people's lives. Ciren and the drivers of the Kangmar County Logistics Service Center defied the blizzard and freezing conditions, carrying forward the spirit of the old Tibet of exceptional dedication, and always charged to the front line of snow relief. Relying on his rich experience in driving and clearing hazards, Ciren successively rescued five stranded vehicles and 38 trapped people.
Shaanxi Province
43. Ma Jianzhao: male, Han ethnic group, born 1969, driver with Xi'an Qinbei Taxi Co., Ltd.
At 3 a.m. on January 26, 2009, Ma Jianzhao heard someone in the family compound shouting loudly "Catch the thieves," and rushed at the burglars disregarding his own safety. Two burglars threatened Ma Jianzhao with pipe wrenches more than a foot long. Ma Jianzhao was not in the least afraid, charged forward and fought the two burglars desperately, and, though injured in many parts of his body, still held on to the burglars and would not let go. In the end, with the help of the crowd, the two burglars were captured and handed over to the public security authorities.
44. Zhang Yu: male, Han ethnic group, born 1972, driver with Xi'an Lianhu Taxi Co., Ltd.
At about 5 p.m. on June 12, 2009, Zhang Yu found Mr. Chang of the Electric Power Bookstore lying on the ground covered in blood, while a man was fleeing toward the south side of the bookstore. Zhang Yu seized an iron rod and chased after him; the criminal suspect got into a taxi and prepared to continue fleeing, and Zhang Yu sprang forward and blocked the taxi. The attacker tried several times to open the door and escape, and each time Zhang Yu blocked him back with the iron rod. A few minutes later police officers arrived at the scene and captured the criminal suspect surnamed Zhang, who had stabbed several people to death or injury with scissors.
Qinghai Province
45. Ma Liang: male, Hui ethnic group, born 1979, driver with the Sixth Branch of Xining Public Transport Co., Ltd.
At about 6 p.m. on June 8, 2009, a man suddenly rushed onto the bus driven by Ma Liang, waving a dagger in his right hand, threatening the passengers on board and provoking trouble. Ma Liang quickly left the driver's seat and came up in front of the man, cleverly attracting the criminal's attention, and then, seizing the right moment, kicked the dagger out of the criminal's hand. During the struggle the criminal smashed a window and jumped off to flee. Ma Liang, disregarding his injured arm, chased him for 300 meters and subdued him, taking him to the public security authorities with the help of passers-by.
Gansu Province
46. Zhao Xingwen: male, Han ethnic group, born 1973, driver with Jiuquan Yafei Yongsheng Tourist Automobile Rental Co., Ltd.
At 3 p.m. on March 28, 2009, a woman in an abnormal emotional state took Zhao Xingwen's taxi to Heishan Lake in Jiayuguan City. After Zhao Xingwen turned the car around, he heard that someone had jumped into the reservoir. Zhao Xingwen ran swiftly toward the scene, saw the woman struggling in the water, jumped into the reservoir, quickly swam to her side, lifted her with all his strength and, with the help of the crowd, brought the woman safely ashore. The person rescued was precisely the woman who had taken Zhao Xingwen's taxi.
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
47. Gao Jun: male, Han ethnic group, born 1981, driver with Zhongyuan Taxi Company of the Yinchuan High-tech Zone.
At 3 a.m. one day in August 2008, six criminals were stealing at the entrance of the tourist bus station and, after being exposed, beat the passengers. Gao Jun and other drivers fought the criminals without regard for their own safety and finally captured one of them. At about 3 a.m. on February 2, 2009, four men with flustered looks got into Gao Jun's taxi. Gao Jun noticed that the four were behaving suspiciously, continued to follow them after they got out, and reported to the police station. Police officers captured five suspects in one move and found a replica "Type 64" pistol in the room.
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
48. Zhu Weibing: male, Han ethnic group, born 1958, driver with the Hongda Fleet of Urumqi City.
At about 8:30 p.m. on July 5, 2009, as Zhu Weibing was operating near the South Gate of Urumqi City, he came upon a gang of rioters attacking a bus, beating and killing the passengers on board. A man covered all over in blood was being chased and beaten by the rioters and appeared to be in mortal danger. Zhu Weibing, disregarding his own safety, resolutely rushed forward, shielded the man with his back from the rioters' clubs, got the man into his car and drove away quickly, saving the life of one member of the public.
49. Guo Lin: male, Han ethnic group, born 1962, driver of Route 1 with Urumqi Public Transport Company.
On the afternoon of July 5, 2009, as Guo Lin drove to the Daximen intersection, nearly a hundred rioters with weapons in hand charged at the bus. Guo Lin quickly sped through the intersection and escaped the rioters' pursuit, and directed the passengers on board to get off in a safe place and take shelter. At this point the rioters behind rushed at Guo Lin's bus again, and one woman was being chased by a group of rioters. Guo Lin, disregarding his own safety, let the woman get on board and floored the accelerator, shaking off the three rioters who tried to pry open the door and forcing his way through the blockade of a group of rioters to take the woman to a safe place.
Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps
50. Ma Chunsheng: male, Dongxiang ethnic group, born 1963, self-employed taxi driver with the 222nd Regiment of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.
On the afternoon of June 23, 2009, Chen Zhike, a first-grade pupil at Fubei Middle School, accidentally fell into the cooling water circulation pool of a thermal power station, which was 1.8 meters deep. Ma Chunsheng, washing his car nearby, heard the cries for help and jumped into the pool without the slightest hesitation and, with the assistance of others on the bank, pulled Chen Zhike out. In August 2008, the two-year-old son of a migrant worker couple was accidentally scalded, and took Ma Chunsheng's taxi to Urumqi for medical treatment. Ma Chunsheng not only charged no fare but also advanced 400 yuan for medical expenses.
