Late in the year and bitterly cold, yet the passion remains!
On December 8, the full schedule of the Kunlun Lubricant Cup · 2017 China Car Performance Competition (CCPC) officially drew to a close. As the closing battle, the Yakeshi round was packed with highlights. Today, the editor reviews the three biggest highlights of the event to bring you the exciting moments of roaring engines once again!
Highlight 1: Yakeshi’s demanding cold-region testing
Before the Yakeshi battle began, the “starting gun” of the 2017 CCPC had already fired in Karamay and Yancheng · Dafeng. Many entrants said: “This let us feel the vitality and passion of the CCPC in different cities and cultural regions as well.”
The Yakeshi round was divided into several groups: the traditional technology group (Group T), the new energy vehicle group (Group E) and the Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge (Group K). The reason the final battle of the 2017 CCPC was sited in Yakeshi was to leverage the region’s unique advantages in “cold resources” — with lower test temperatures and longer test cycles, it performs demanding cold-region testing on the competing vehicles and drivers.
As the main battlefield of the ice-and-snow battle, China’s two most professional ice-and-snow proving grounds located in Yakeshi — the CATARC Hulunbuir Winter Automotive Proving Ground and the Bosch (Hulunbuir) Automotive Testing Technology Center — both have tracks laid out over large areas of ice and snow. Among them, the 1-kilometer handling ice-and-snow track and the circular ice-and-snow surface with an outer diameter of 600 meters were not available at the previous two rounds. Therefore, to compare vehicles’ cold resistance and drivers’ handling ability, the final conclusion can clearly only be drawn in Yakeshi.
On entering the starting area, the handling track immediately presents multiple corners, which tests not only the driver’s braking points but also places high demands on the vehicle’s braking system, traction control and suspension balance system. For the professional drivers of Groups T and E, formulating a corresponding strategy is not too difficult, but for the 15 grassroots drivers taking part in the “Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge” it is no small challenge.
Highlight 2: Speed contest on the ice-and-snow track
As the only Class-A event in China that tests production car performance, the exciting ice-and-snow competition of the grassroots drivers is undoubtedly the biggest highlight. Because the track is short, obstacles and corners on it are denser and more tightly packed, making the racing unusually intense and watchable. To gain a time advantage, the drivers went at full throttle from the start, wanting to cross the finish line as quickly as possible. However, because the ice-and-snow surface is too slippery, the drivers and their cars also suffered quite a bit: vehicles struggle to maintain good grip at high speed, and drivers who have just finished accelerating on a straight often have to brake and dive into a rugged curve — one climax after another. Slalom and drifting, cars crashing through the snow and throwing up “snow rain” nearly a zhang high — the scene was simply thrilling.
As the group the public cares most about, the biggest feature of the Group K “Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge” is “speed,” and describing it as lightning-fast is no exaggeration. On competition day, the 15 drivers averaged around 80 kilometers per hour on the ice-and-snow track, and at corner overtaking points some cars even swung their tails into spectacular drifts through inertia. Wang Yanlong, who ultimately took the “King of Racing” crown, said with feeling: “After every corner, entering the straight is a new sprint point; the drivers beside you suddenly accelerate and charge forward, chasing each other on a track only 6 meters wide and throwing up great waves of snow — surely the most beautiful scene of this event.”
Highlight 3: “Nine-ball queen” Pan Xiaoting sets the circuit alight
As the image ambassador of the “Kunlun Lubricant King of Racing Challenge,” Pan Xiaoting transformed into the “Goddess of Ice and Snow,” braving temperatures of more than minus 30 degrees Celsius to wave the flag and start the Group K competition. Pan Xiaoting’s appearance set the whole venue cheering and instantly became the focus of attention, igniting the interactive enthusiasm of on-site spectators and netizens and pushing the atmosphere to a climax.
During the race, major media and online platforms broadcast the whole event simultaneously, letting audiences and drivers witness the passionate moments on site through various channels and pushing the Kunlun Lubricant Cup · 2017 CCPC to another climax. Although the on-site temperature of minus 30 degrees made it hard for many spectators to watch in person, the number of viewers joining the online interaction that day was unexpected, and their enthusiasm likewise injected a deeply heated atmosphere into the venue, once again proving the CCPC’s considerable influence among the public. In addition, activities organized by the participating manufacturers, such as owner exchanges, business cooperation and dealer exchanges, significantly boosted the event’s popularity.
The CCPC has always been committed to building a domestic Class-A event that authoritatively tests production car performance. As the title sponsor of the 2017 CCPC, Kunlun Lubricant provided comprehensive support for the event in many aspects, and its high-quality oils accompanied the competing vehicles from scorching heat into bitter cold, ensuring zero-incident operation all the way. On the road ahead, we believe that with Kunlun Lubricant’s support, the CCPC will certainly reach an even higher level.
