Drive axle oil GL-5+ contains a relatively high level of sulfur-phosphorus additives with good extreme-pressure anti-wear performance; adding it to a transmission will corrode copper-alloy components such as the synchronizers and also produce more sludge that accumulates on the surfaces of gears and synchronizers. After a period of time, this affects the smoothness of shifting, makes gear engagement difficult and shortens transmission service life.
