On the afternoon of February 28, 2017, a technology launch event for Kunlun 15W-40 D12 long-life diesel engine oil was held at the Xinkeyuan Hotel in Daqing, Heilongjiang. The release of this new technology marks that Kunlun Lubricants has become the first in China to achieve a technological breakthrough enabling an ultra-long 120,000-kilometre oil change interval for diesel engine oil.
Overcoming an international technical challenge
In recent years, as the independent technology of domestic diesel engines has continued to advance, many users have raised the need to extend diesel engine oil change intervals. To meet the needs of a broad base of users, PetroChina's lubricant company set up a dedicated joint research group for long-life diesel engine oil. Based on feedback from the market, the group carried out a large number of simulation tests and successively overcame international technical challenges such as high-temperature detergency, high oxidation resistance and high dispersancy, successfully launching the Kunlun 15W-40 D12 long-life diesel engine oil with independent intellectual property rights.
Tang Zhongping, general head of product development and Director of the Lanzhou Lubricant Research and Development Center, said: "The name D12 comes from the recommended oil change interval of 120,000 kilometres under appropriate operating conditions. This product was developed according to the technical characteristics and actual operating conditions of Chinese engines; it achieves a perfect combination of unique antioxidant and dispersant technology with detergent formulation technology, and its lasting durability helps engines unleash powerful performance." It is reported that the team also plans to carry out the development and testing of oils with even longer oil change mileage on this basis, further tapping the potential of independent core technologies and continuously setting new records.
Each heavy truck saves 9,000 yuan a year
"After running 150,000 kilometres, we inspected the dismantled parts visually and by hand and found no obvious signs of wear, relatively little piston carbon deposit, very clean oil pans and rocker arm covers, and bearing shells as bright as new," said Yang Guofeng, Deputy Director of the Evaluation Center of Kunlun Lubricants' Lanzhou R&D Center. "The surfaces of key components such as the camshaft, tappets and cylinder liners were quite smooth, almost identical to original factory parts, with no obvious abnormal wear. What was even more pleasing was that even the honing marks on the cylinder liner surfaces were basically the same as those on factory parts."
Zhang Yanjun, driver of a FAW J6 heavy truck with the licence plate Hei M P3075, said: "We used this 120,000-kilometre product and found that when fully loaded and going uphill it was quite powerful, the noise was lower, it saved a fair amount of diesel, it started easily in winter without preheating, and the number of routine maintenance visits was reduced."
"The product we used before had an oil change interval of 15,000 kilometres; Kunlun D12 long-life diesel engine oil extends the interval to 120,000 kilometres, greatly improving vehicle availability and reducing the cost of oil, consumables and labour. Each vehicle directly saves an average of 9,000 yuan a year in maintenance costs, so Haorui's 200 vehicles can directly save more than 1.8 million yuan a year," said Wang Gang, fleet captain of Haorui Logistics Company.
