R&D on Naphthenic Heavy Oil Wins the First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award 20120417

At the 2012 National Science and Technology Awards Conference held at the beginning of the year, the project Research, Development and Industrial Application of Technology for Producing High-End Products from Naphthenic Heavy Oil, led by PetroChina Karamay Petrochemical Company and jointly applied for by PetroChina Lubricant Company, the Research Institute of Petroleum Processing and others, won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. This was the only first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in China's refining and chemical industry in 2011, reflecting major progress in scientific and technological innovation in China's petrochemical and lubricant industries and another rich achievement of PetroChina Lubricant Company's strong independent innovation and R&D system.

Naphthenic heavy oil is a high-acid, high-calcium, high-viscosity, low-quality crude oil. Because it is difficult to extract, transport and refine, it is called a world-class problem in petroleum circles. Over the years, PetroChina Lubricant Company and PetroChina Karamay Petrochemical Company and other units have relied on scientific and technological progress and advanced technical equipment and, through sustained independent R&D and long-term joint research, achieved results covering the entire process of naphthenic heavy oil development, storage and transportation, refining, product development and market development, realizing breakthrough progress in complete sets of technology for processing naphthenic heavy oil.

This scientific research achievement can guide oilfields in separately extracting naphthenic heavy oil from crude oil during extraction, achieving the goals of deep processing of low-quality heavy oil, consuming coarse feedstock, producing premium products and increasing benefits. It produced 30 granted patents, including 28 invention patents, 19 national and industry standards, three monographs and 75 high-end products; it formed a batch of complete sets of technology with independent intellectual property rights, built a heavy oil deep processing base and a naphthenic product production base, brought the processing technology level to the international advanced level, and moved China's heavy oil deep processing technology into the international front ranks.
